Abstract

Medical education traditionally emphasizes academic rigor, often at the expense of practical community engagement. This experience article describes my journey beyond the confines of a medical school’s preclinical curriculum to engage with the social determinants of health through a partnership with the Cincinnati Homeless Coalition. My narrative begins with my initial foray into the community, detailing the inception and execution of a project aligned with the organization’s mission to combat homelessness. I discuss the challenges encountered, propose enhancements to overcome these limitations, and reflect on the project’s implications for future medical cohorts. The article underscores the value of understanding social determinants of health, such as socioeconomic status and education, and their influence on health outcomes. It advocates for the integration of community-based experiences in medical training, asserting that such involvement can enrich the educational journey of medical students by providing a broader perspective on healthcare needs and patient advocacy.

About MBBS Syllabus

The National Medical Commission (NMC) earlier known as the Medical Council of India (MCI) is the authority responsible for prescribing the MBBS syllabus. According to the IMC (Indian Medical Council) Act, students studying MBBS in America must clear the Foreign Medical Graduates Exam (FMGE) also known as the MCI Screening Test to practise medicine in India.

NMC Guidelines for Studying MBBS in USA

NMC has not set any specific guidelines for Indian students who wish to study MBBS in the USA. However, according to the NMC’s guidelines, those who want to pursue an MBBS abroad and then practise medicine in India must meet certain requirements as given below:

According to NMC, the duration of the MBBS programme abroad should be at least 54 months.

Candidates have to complete a 12-month internship from the same medical college.

Universities enrolling Indian students must mandatorily cover subjects like General Medicine, Community Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Anaesthesia General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Otorhinolaryngology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Emergency or Casualty services, lab services, and related sub-specialties.

Duration of MBBS in USA

FMGE Requirements for Indian Students to Study MBBS in USA

FMGE’s full form is the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination. It is a licensing exam conducted in India for international medical graduates wishing to practise medicine there. It is a computer-based test and is conducted twice a year in June and December by NBE.

Candidates who wish to appear in the FMGE entrance examination must fulfil the following requirements:

Students who have completed their medical graduation abroad must register with a State Medical Council (SMC) to practise in India after completion of medical education.

According to the Indian Medical Council Act, to take the FMGE test, a student must obtain an Eligibility Certificate (EC) from the MCI before taking admission to a medical course in a foreign university.

Candidates are advised to select and apply to their medical courses themselves and not through travel agents.

Candidates must ensure to gather authentic information from their university and agents about tuition and other fees, facilities, the curriculum of the course, the language of instruction/, teaching, availability of hostel facilities, monthly living expenses, etc.

All eight private medical colleges in Bangladesh featured here are accredited by the country’s medical authority, the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council.

MBBS in Bangladesh: Medical Colleges and Hospitals

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has mandated Indian medical colleges to partner with functioning hospitals to provide practical training to medical students. It also requires foreign medical students to complete an internship at their own institution to be eligible to participate in the FMGE. Of the eight private medical colleges in Bangladesh, only Zainul Haque Sikder Women’s Medical College And Hospital did not mention the one-year internship that is mandatory as part of the MBBS program.

This is the same university and the details of the hospital’s ownership were also not clear. Careers360 could not determine whether Zainul Haque Sikder Women’s Medical College And Hospital has its own hospital or is affiliated with a hospital. The remaining seven universities have hospitals.

MBBS Colleges in Bangladesh: Ranking

International medical colleges were evaluated by ranking agencies such as Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Times Higher Education (THE), Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) and Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). However, none of the above medical universities in Bangladesh are ranked by any global ranking agency.

MBBS in Bangladesh for Indian Students: Duration and Degree

The MBBS program in India includes four and a half years of theoretical training and one year of mandatory practical training. However, the name of the medical degree varies from country to country and even the duration of the MBBS or equivalent degree may vary. For example, after getting admission in MBBS in Bangladesh, students will undergo a five-year undergraduate medical program followed by one year of compulsory internship. Bangladesh offers MBBS degree to medical students. All the above private medical colleges in Bangladesh except Rangpur Community Medical College (RCMC) have the standard 5-year MBBS program duration. RCMC appears to offer a 6-year MBBS program followed by an internship.

MBBS Tuition Fees in Bangladesh for Indian Students

The average annual cost of studying medicine in a private university in India is around Rs 1.7 million. This amount contrasts with the average annual cost of studying MBBS abroad, which is around Rs 6.81 million. Careers360 has analysed the tuition fees for Indian students to study MBBS in Bangladesh. The fee structure for MBBS in private medical colleges in Bangladesh for Indian students ranges from Rs 8,00,676 to Rs 72,961.

MBBS Admission in Bangladesh

In India, to get admission in a medical college, all medical students must pass the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG). Also, to get admission in MBBS in Bangladesh, Indian candidates must first pass NEET UG and seek permission from NMC to study MBBS abroad if they intend to work in India.

Careers360 has checked the MBBS Bangladesh admission criteria for the above private medical colleges in Bangladesh and there are some colleges where Indian students can get admission without NEET. But for Indian students who are planning to return to India, they will need to pass NEET to be eligible for FMGE.
